Yogurt. I’ve been doing a taste test of various brands of organic yogurt. I dont’ even know why I buy organic, but the labels were very convincing that organic yogurt is better for me. And the price point for organic vs. regular were the same. So I went with organic.

Taste test:

Brown Cow – cream top. delicious and not runny. $0.99/container

Stonyfield – smooth and cream. tied with Brown Cow $0.99/container

Stonyfield – fruit on bottom. hated it. was too inconsistent in texture. $0.99/container

Trade Joe’s Greek Organic Yogurt, honey flavored – I hated this. hated it. hated it. why? The consistency of the yogurt was between thick and thin. It tasted like sour cream gone bad, and had a really nasty aftertaste. I took one bite and didn’t like it at all. I thought I would give it a second chance and took a second bite; then i immediately knew i made the wrong decision and threw it in the garbage bin where it belonged. $1.39/container

Some soy based thing – $2.30/container

Siggi- i felt super healthy eating this. had raspberry/strawberry or something like that. however the yogurt is not sweet at all. so if you like a sweet yogurt this is not for you. it’s double strained so super thick, it was like eating cheesecake almost. - $2.50/container

http://skyr.com/

found out that stonyfield and brown cow are the same company. and the yogurt although organic contains “natural flavors.” i finally decided to figure out what the hell that is suppose to mean. I found on the Code of Federal Regulations that the definition of “natural flavors” is as follows:

Title 21, Section 101, part 22 of :

“The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.“

some reason that doesn’t sound natural to me. but it is in ALOT of food we eat. BUT it’s not in the Siggi yogurt.
